Parent-and-Me Geo Bee

UPDATE: The Parent and Me Geo bee has been postponed to Spring 2009. Please check back for exact dates.

An India Community Center and Water, No Ice joint event

It comes as no surprise that this year’s Scripps Spelling Bee and National Geographic Bee winners were both Indian American children. As a community we value both education and academic competitiveness highly and ensure these values are transmitted to the next generation by enrolling them in all kinds of school, local and regional contests.

But, so far, this attention has been a one-way street. We, the parents, are the teachers and the children are the taught. In some cases, this is our way of fulfilling our own unrealized dreams of participating in such contests in our past.

Why not make the process of acquiring knowledge an interactive and participatory one for the whole family? The Parent-and-Me Geo Bee is one such idea that would pit teams comprised of one parent and one child against others in the Bay Area. Instead of just motivating kids to prepare and learn, parents would become pupils themselves, being open to being quizzed and tutored by their children.
